USA B1/B2 Tourist Visa — Application, Funds and Common Refusals

A US B1/B2 visa lets an eligible traveller seek temporary entry for permitted business or tourism purposes; it does not promise admission, employment or a particular length of stay. Applicants from Kerala and Indian residents in the UAE often focus on bank balance, but a consular officer considers the complete circumstances: trip purpose, funding, personal and economic ties, immigration history and whether the applicant appears likely to leave after a temporary visit. Ezvisa Immigration supports form review, document organisation and interview preparation without scripts or approval guarantees. This guide was reviewed in July 2026. Fees, appointment procedures and entry policies change, so verify every material point on travel.state.gov, usvisas.state.gov and the relevant US embassy or consulate page.

What a B1/B2 visa permits and does not permit

B-1 covers limited temporary business activities such as attending meetings, negotiating contracts or participating in some professional events. B-2 covers tourism, family visits and certain medical travel. Many visas are annotated B1/B2 so the holder may request admission for a purpose within either category. The permitted activity depends on the real trip, not merely the letters printed on the visa. Productive employment for a US employer, ordinary study or moving permanently is not authorised by a visitor classification.

A visa is permission to travel to a US port of entry and request admission. Customs and Border Protection decides whether to admit the traveller and records the authorised period, usually electronically on Form I-94. The visa expiry date is not the deadline for leaving after each arrival. Conversely, a valid ten-year visa does not entitle someone to live in the United States through repeated long visits. Kerala families should plan each trip as temporary and keep evidence matching the stated purpose.

  • Tourism and genuine short family visits normally fall under B-2.
  • Meetings and defined business activities may fall under B-1.
  • Employment and ordinary degree study require another classification.
  • CBP, not the visa foil, determines admission and authorised stay.

How to apply for a US tourist visa

Most applicants complete Form DS-160 online, save the confirmation page, create the appropriate appointment profile, pay the non-refundable machine-readable visa fee and follow local instructions for biometrics and interview scheduling. The DS-160 asks about identity, family, employment, travel, security and immigration history. Select the actual location where you expect to apply and retain the application ID. Procedures can differ between India and the UAE, and appointment systems can change, so use the official embassy-linked portal rather than an advertisement that imitates it.

At interview, the officer may decide quickly after reviewing the form and asking focused questions. Honest, direct answers are more useful than memorised speeches. Explain where you are going, why, for how long, who pays and why you will return. Supporting documents may be reviewed selectively; carrying a thick folder does not create eligibility. Ezvisa can test whether the DS-160 and intended answers are consistent, but the applicant must personally give truthful information and should never present invented bookings, employment or family circumstances.

  • Complete one accurate DS-160 for each applicant.
  • Pay fees only through the current official appointment process.
  • Follow location-specific instructions for biometrics and interview.
  • Bring passports, confirmation pages and any locally required appointment records.

How much bank balance is required?

The Department of State does not publish one minimum bank balance that guarantees a B1/B2 visa. Funds should be credible for the itinerary, duration, family size and payer. A one-week self-funded visit to a relative differs from a month-long multi-city holiday for four people. Officers can consider income, savings, trip cost and overall circumstances rather than applying a Kerala-wide rupee figure. A modest but affordable plan may be more convincing than an expensive itinerary disconnected from the applicant’s regular earnings.

Use genuine, explainable financial evidence. Recent statements may help show salary credits, savings history and liquidity, while fixed deposits, tax records or business material can add context where relevant. A sudden large deposit is not automatically fatal, but its source should be documented instead of hidden. If a US host pays, the applicant should still explain the relationship and personal circumstances in India or the UAE. Sponsorship does not transfer responsibility for proving a temporary purpose and does not guarantee a visa.

  • Estimate flights, accommodation, internal transport, food and contingency costs.
  • Show who will pay each major part of the trip.
  • Explain recent transfers, asset sales or gifts with genuine records.
  • Never borrow money temporarily only to create a misleading statement.

Temporary intent and ties to India or the UAE

Under US law, many nonimmigrant applicants must overcome a presumption of immigrant intent. There is no single “ties document.” Employment, business responsibilities, dependent family members, education, property, financial commitments and a credible travel pattern can together show reasons to return. The weight differs by person. A young unmarried applicant without property is not automatically ineligible, and an owner of several properties is not automatically approvable. The officer considers the individual picture presented by the DS-160 and interview.

Kerala applicants should avoid manufacturing leave letters or changing job descriptions to appear stronger. Instead, present the genuine reason the trip fits the available leave and financial position. Indian residents working in Dubai or Abu Dhabi can explain their UAE employment, residence validity and return obligations, alongside family connections in India where relevant. If UAE residence will expire during the proposed journey, address the plan honestly. Consular officers can compare current statements with prior applications, so consistency matters across years and locations.

  • State a specific temporary purpose instead of saying only “to see America.”
  • Keep trip length proportionate to approved leave and budget.
  • Disclose close relatives and prior petitions exactly as asked.
  • Use real obligations, not staged employment or property evidence.

Documents and interview preparation

Core items normally include the current passport, DS-160 confirmation and appointment materials required by the post. Useful supporting evidence can include an itinerary, employment or business records, leave approval, financial statements and documents explaining a family visit or conference. Medical visitors may need diagnosis, treatment and funding information. Requirements published by a US embassy or consulate take priority. Translations should be accurate where records are not in English, and every family member should have a truthful individual application even when travelling together.

Interview preparation should improve clarity, not produce rehearsed identical answers. Know the intended dates, cities, host details, approximate cost and job facts stated in the DS-160. If plans are provisional, say so. An invitation letter can explain the host and purpose, but is not mandatory for ordinary independent tourism and cannot replace the applicant’s eligibility. Applicants should not volunteer irrelevant bundles, argue with the officer or guess when they do not know an answer. Concise honesty is safer than a polished but false narrative.

  • Current and relevant previous passports
  • DS-160 confirmation and appointment confirmation
  • Purpose evidence such as itinerary, event or host details
  • Employment, leave, business or study context where useful
  • Financial and payer evidence proportionate to the proposed trip

Visa validity, entries and length of stay

Visa validity and number of entries depend on reciprocity and the visa as issued. Indian nationals commonly see long-validity, multiple-entry B1/B2 visas, but no applicant is entitled to a ten-year grant and policies can change. A passport may expire before a still-valid visa. Department of State guidance explains when travel with the old passport and a new valid passport may be possible, provided the visa is undamaged and biographical details remain consistent. Do not remove or transfer the visa yourself.

At each trip, CBP decides admission and creates an I-94 showing the admit-until date or status. Check the electronic record soon after arrival and resolve errors promptly. The authorised stay can be shorter than six months, even with a visa valid for years. Leaving by the I-94 deadline is essential. Frequent visits, long stays or apparent remote living may trigger questions because B1/B2 is for temporary visits, not a substitute for residence or employment authorisation.

  • Read the visa for validity, entries and annotation.
  • Check the I-94 after every admission.
  • Plan departure using the I-94, not the visa expiration date.
  • Carry both passports only when official guidance permits use of a valid visa in an expired passport.

Can a visitor extend a stay in the United States?

Some B visitors may request an extension from US Citizenship and Immigration Services before the authorised stay expires, commonly using Form I-539 where eligible. They should show a legitimate temporary reason, explain arrangements and funding, and demonstrate plans to depart. Filing is not automatic approval, and travel while a request is pending can affect it. Certain entrants or circumstances may not qualify. Always read USCIS instructions and the I-94 rather than relying on the original visa or a verbal estimate at entry.

An extension should address an unforeseen or credible need, not serve as a routine plan to remain indefinitely. Late filing, unauthorised work or false reasons can damage present and future immigration matters. Even a timely pending filing can create practical risk for future travel, and accruing unlawful presence may have serious consequences. Ezvisa Kerala can flag general document issues, but US legal advice may be appropriate for status violations, medical emergencies, denied extensions or complex changes of status.

  • Confirm eligibility and file before the I-94 date where possible.
  • Explain the new departure plan and how expenses will be paid.
  • Keep proof of timely filing and monitor USCIS notices.
  • Seek qualified US advice immediately if status may have expired.

Common reasons for B1/B2 refusal

A common refusal is under Immigration and Nationality Act section 214(b), meaning the applicant did not establish qualification for the requested nonimmigrant visa, often including sufficient temporary intent. It is not necessarily an accusation of fraud and generally has no appeal process. Other cases can be refused under section 221(g) while information or administrative processing remains outstanding. Inadmissibility issues, misrepresentation, unlawful presence, criminal history or prior violations involve different legal questions and should not be casually labelled a “normal rejection.”

Weak applications often contain a vague purpose, implausible budget, inconsistent employment, unexplained relatives, inaccurate travel history or answers that conflict with the DS-160. Reapplying immediately with the same facts and a newly printed bank statement usually does not solve a 214(b) refusal. Review what materially changed and complete every new form accurately. Never hide the refusal. Ezvisa focuses on consistency and readiness, but cannot know an officer’s unpublished reasoning or guarantee that a later application will succeed.

  • Unclear or non-credible temporary travel purpose
  • Circumstances not sufficiently demonstrating intended departure
  • Material inconsistencies between the DS-160 and interview
  • Missing information or administrative processing under section 221(g)
  • False documents, misrepresentation or previous immigration violations

Recommended Process

  1. Step 1. Define a genuine temporary trip with realistic cities, dates, purpose, leave and cost before beginning the application.
  2. Step 2. Decide where to apply based on residence and the relevant US post’s procedures; Indian residents in the UAE should check third-country or resident appointment rules.
  3. Step 3. Complete Form DS-160 carefully, preserving the application ID and checking employment, family, travel, social-media and refusal answers for accuracy.
  4. Step 4. Create the official appointment profile, pay the non-refundable fee and schedule biometrics or interview steps as instructed by the post.
  5. Step 5. Prepare a compact supporting file covering purpose, funding, work or business context, residence and any issue that genuinely needs evidence.
  6. Step 6. Review the submitted DS-160 before interview and practise concise truthful explanations without memorising scripts or inventing ties.
  7. Step 7. Attend with required originals and answer the officer directly; provide additional documents only as requested.
  8. Step 8. After issuance, inspect the visa for errors; at travel, answer CBP truthfully and check the electronic I-94 after admission.

Document Checklist

  • Passport valid for travel and relevant old passports retained
  • DS-160 completed personally or reviewed line by line
  • Confirmation page and current appointment instructions saved
  • Trip purpose, approximate dates and cities clearly understood
  • Host, hotel, conference or medical details where relevant
  • Trip budget proportionate to income, savings and duration
  • Recent financial activity explainable with genuine evidence
  • Employment, business, study or retirement facts accurately stated
  • Approved leave and reason to return described honestly
  • Relatives, petitions, refusals and travel history fully disclosed
  • Marriage and child information consistent across family applications
  • UAE residence and employment evidence for applicants filing there
  • No employment or permanent-move plan hidden inside a visitor application
  • Official embassy page rechecked immediately before attendance

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating a large bank balance as a substitute for a credible temporary trip.
  • Moving borrowed money into an account briefly to mislead the officer.
  • Allowing an agent to submit a DS-160 without reviewing every answer.
  • Using a memorised interview script that conflicts with the form.
  • Hiding US relatives, immigrant petitions, prior refusals or overstays.
  • Presenting fake flight bookings, invitations, jobs or business records.
  • Applying for B1/B2 when the real purpose is employment or ordinary study.
  • Assuming a ten-year visa permits a ten-year stay or repeated residence.
  • Leaving according to the visa expiry date instead of the I-94 deadline.
  • Filing an extension late without understanding status consequences.
  • Reapplying after 214(b) with no meaningful change or improved explanation.
  • Buying tickets before issuance because an appointment agent promised approval.
  • Ignoring post-specific changes made after this July 2026 review.

FAQ

USA B1/B2 Visit Visa — Common Questions

How do I apply for a US tourist visa?

Complete Form DS-160, pay the required non-refundable fee and follow the official appointment instructions for biometrics and an interview. Prepare a genuine temporary purpose, funding explanation and accurate history. Procedures vary by post, so applicants in India or the UAE should use the embassy-linked appointment system.

What is a B1/B2 Visa?

It is a nonimmigrant visitor visa combining permitted temporary business activities under B-1 and tourism, family visits or certain medical travel under B-2. It does not authorise ordinary US employment or permanent residence. CBP separately determines admission and stay length each time the traveller arrives.

How much bank balance is required?

There is no published universal minimum for B1/B2 approval. Funds should reasonably cover the planned trip and be consistent with income, savings, family size and any host support. Explain unusual deposits honestly. A high balance alone cannot establish temporary intent or guarantee a visa.

How long is the visa valid?

Validity depends on nationality reciprocity and the visa actually issued; many Indian applicants receive multiple-entry visas with long validity, but this is not guaranteed. Visa validity only permits travel to seek entry. The I-94 created by CBP controls how long each admitted stay lasts.

Can I extend my stay?

Some visitors may apply to USCIS before their I-94 expires, if eligible, with a genuine temporary reason, funds and a departure plan. Approval is discretionary. Do not assume filing cures late status or allows work. Complex or expired-status situations need qualified US immigration advice.

What are the reasons for rejection?

Common issues include failure to establish qualification and temporary intent under section 214(b), inconsistent answers, unclear purpose or funding, and missing information under section 221(g). Fraud, prior violations and inadmissibility are more serious. The refusal sheet and cited legal section matter.

Is an invitation letter required for a US tourist visa?

Not for ordinary independent tourism. A genuine host letter may help explain a family visit, accommodation or payer, but it does not replace the applicant’s own eligibility. Do not buy a template invitation or claim a relationship that is not real merely to strengthen the file.

Can I apply in Dubai as an Indian citizen?

Indian citizens lawfully resident in the UAE can generally check appointment availability and local rules at the relevant US mission. Bring residence evidence if required. Wait times and procedures differ, and applying in the UAE does not change the need to show a credible temporary trip.

Can I work remotely from the United States on B1/B2?

Visitor status is not general US work authorisation, and remote-work facts can be legally sensitive. Do not assume that being paid abroad makes every activity permitted. Describe the intended activity accurately and obtain qualified US advice where work will continue during an extended visit.

What should I do after a 214(b) refusal?

Read the refusal notice, retain a copy and review whether the application was accurate and whether circumstances have materially changed. There is generally no appeal for 214(b). A new fee and application are required to reapply, and immediate repetition with identical facts rarely adds value.
